Red Wing Commemorative - 1995 Miniature Giraffe Planter
This listing is for a 1995 Red Wing Collectors Society (RWCS) commemorative miniature
giraffe planter figurine and the historical card that came with the commemorative.
These commemoratives are very hard to find!
The original giraffe figurine was designed for Red Wing Potteries by Charles
Murphy, the well-known designer and artist, who died in 1994. It is appropriate
that the first RWCS commemorative produced after his passing should be a tribute
to Mr. Murphy. Of the many vintage collectibles he designed for Red Wing Pottery,
this giraffe planter was one of his personal favorites.
The 1995 commemoratives were made by Western Stoneware of Monmouth, Illinois.
Like the originals, the giraffe commemoratives are hand painted. This gives the
piece added interest as most previous RWCS commemoratives have used decals or ink
stamps. The raised lettering on the bottom is similar in style to markings used
on Red Wing art pottery. The M-1995 gives recognition to the many contributions
of Charles Murphy. M-1995 indicates the convention year along with the M prefix
commonly used on Murphy-designed pieces.
This Red Wing figurine is from my personal Red Wing collection and is in perfect
condition. It is approximately 6" tall , 4-1/2" long, and 2-3/4" deep.
