This beautiful green Depression Glass bowl (or Elegant Glass bowl) was made by
Paden City Glass in the early 1930s. It is from Paden City's #701 line. The Lotus
Glass Company applied the beautiful gold overlay to the edges of the rolled rim.
This style of bowl is often called a console bowl.
Many experts consider this glassware to be Elegant Glass instead of Depression
Glass. The term "Depression Glass" refers to American glassware that was mass produced,
inexpensive, and widely available. It was often given away as premiums or sold at
dime stores. The more expensive glassware from the same time period is considered
Elegant Glass. Depression Glass and Elegant Glass can often be distinguished
by the manufacturer. However, some glassware made by Paden City is considered
Depression Glass and other glassware is considered Elegant Glass, depending on the
pattern.
Uranium compounds have been used to make glass yellow since about 1840. In
the manufacturing process, they added a bit of copper sulfate to the batch of yellow
and blue to make green. This depression glass bowl glows under a black light and
is green. Uranium glass is often confused with vaseline glass.
Paden City Glass Manufacturing Company of Paden City, West
Virginia, was founded by David Fisher. They manufactured popular etched tableware
in over 20 different colors between 1916 and 1951. They produced both Depression
Glass and Elegant Glass.
This beautiful green rolled rim glass bowl measures approximately 12" across
and 2" tall.
This item is in excellent condition - no chips, cracks, or repairs with only
minor wear to the gold overlay.
The last picture shows the bowl with the matching candleholders. This listing,
however, is only for the bowl.
