Mortar and Pestle Made from Olive Wood - Spain

View Vintage Kitchenware Category

This wooden mortar and pestle was made from olive wood in Spain. The bottom sticker says "Olivera" and "Made in Spain." The grain of the wood is truly beautiful - take a look at the pictures!

The mortar is 2-3/4" tall and 4" across at the top. The pestle is 5-1/2" long.

A mortar is a bowl-shaped container made of a hard wood, marble, pottery, or stone. The pestle is a tool used to grind inside the mortar (bowl) and pulverize dried spices, garlic, grains, herbs, and other food substances as well as medicines.

Simply place the substance to be ground inside the mortar (bowl). Sit the pestle on top of the substance and apply downward pressure, then grind using a circular motion. This action forces the substance against the surface of the bowl and pulverizes it. The grinding process releases the oils and flavor essence of the substance.

You can use it to infuse fresh ground flavors of dry spices, fresh basil, sage, tarragon, garlic, pepper, and more. It is also great for grinding nuts, seeds, and spices. Or, it is pretty enough just to display it!
