These older Longaberger baskets are all retired. We purchased them from a lady who used to be a Longaberger distributor in the 1980s and 1990s. She only used them at her Longaberger shows. Longaberger Pottery cookie molds are fun and highly collectible!
The Longaberger Basket Company, the nation's number one maker of handcrafted baskets, is an interesting company - it is basically a large family business. It is a privately-held, direct-sales marketing company specializing in baskets and traditional home accent accessories. Longaberger baskets are are all hand woven with Grade A maple wood and are known for their craftsmanship. One Longaberger employee weaves about 50 baskets a day and always initials each basket made.
In 1918 the Longaberger basket-making tradition began. John Wendell Longaberger took a job with the Dresden Basket Factory. This laid the foundation for the current Longaberger Company. He learned basket making by crafting basket bottoms. In 1936 he purchased the Dresden Basket Factory and renamed it the Ohio Ware Company, specializing in ware baskets and pottery. Ware baskets were used to carry pottery ware for the region's booming pottery industry.
Dave Longaberger was born in 1934, and in 1972 he noticed that baskets were becoming very popular. Dave asked his dad to make several dozen baskets, and they all sold within a month. The Longaberger Company was started in 1973 by Dave Longaberger with its headquarters in Newark, Ohio. The headquarters' building is a giant replica of the Longaberger Medium Market Basket (complete with huge metal handles), only 160 times larger. The Longaberger Company has grown into a multi-million dollar business with over 67,000 sales consultants in all 50 states.
