This English oak plant tub was made by R. A. Lister & Co. Ltd in Dursley, England
in the late 1800s. These planter tubs are very hard to find. Great for use as an
indoor planter, an outdoor planter, or a garden planter.
Robert Ashton Lister, an agricultural implement manufacturer, founded Listers
of Dursley, Gloucestershire, England, in 1867. Soon an eclectic range of products
appeared under his name. Among them were milk churns, cream separators, other dairy
equipment, sheep shearing machinery, plant stands, and wooden garden seats.
Lister always purchased quality English, Austrian, or American oak to make its
tubs. Many of the Lister planters were made from the timber of British warships.
This planter is in very good condition, especially for its age. The two copper
1" strips that encircle the tub are very snug around the tub. Some of the tops of
the oak slats are loose and three of the wood pegs at the top are missing, but the
copper strips hold the planter secure. The copper strips have darkened. I have left
them that way because I like the looks of the tarnished copper. Of course, they
could be cleaned to look very shiny! I don't see any cracks in the wood, and the
wood still is a beautiful medium brown color.
The bottom of the tub says "Lister 36658." The inside of the planter has a white
tin or porcelain tag with the manufacturer's information. Take a look at the pictures.
This tub is 9" tall and 10" across the top.
